What is Foot Pain?

Foot pain is one of the most common physical complaints, affecting people of all ages and lifestyles. Foot pain can occur anywhere in your foot, including your heel, arch and toes. It’s usually a symptom of an injury or an underlying health condition.

Symptoms of Foot Pain

Foot pain can stem from a variety of sources, ranging from minor injuries to chronic conditions. You may feel foot pain in the top, bottom or sides of your feet.

Some symptoms of foot pain may include:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Sharp or burning sensations
  • Difficulty bearing weight
  • Pain that worsens with activity or after rest

Potential Causes of Foot Pain

If pain persists for more than a few days, or if it’s severe and sudden, it’s a good idea to consult Optimum Therapies.

Some potential causes of foot pain include:

  • Plantar Fasciitis– is one of the leading causes of heel pain when the thick band of tissue connecting the heel to the toes becomes inflamed (plantar fascia)
  • Flat Feet or High Arches– abnormal foot structure can put added stress on the muscles and ligaments in the feet, leading to pain, fatigue, or even injuries over time
  • Bunions and Hammertoes– deformities develop over time, often due to ill-fitting shoes or genetics, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty walking
  • Arthritis– can impact the joints in the feet, leading to stiffness, swelling, and chronic pain
  • Nerve Damage– often associated with diabetes, nerve damage can cause tingling, burning, or shooting pain in the feet
  • Injuries– sprains, fractures, or overuse injuries are common in athletes and active individuals
  • Improper Footwear– shoes that lack proper arch support, cushioning, or fit can lead to pain in the heels, arches, or balls of the feet

How is Foot Pain Treated?

Foot pain is often treatable and in many cases, preventable. Often, if you are experiencing foot pain, there may be other factors at play. You may also have issues with your toes or your ankle. Depending on where you are feeling pain, Optimum Therapies will determine which structures are involved.

Our therapists have many different treatment methods and skillsets they use to meet you where you’re at and help you progress through your recovery process. We use a full-body approach when treating the foot.

You can first expect:

  • A thorough medical history
  • Discussion about your past treatments
  • Tests and a physical exam to determine the underlying issue
  • A conversation about potential cause or condition that may be contributing to your foot pain

Once we have talked with you to determine the underlying issues with your foot, we will move forward with a treatment plan. We want you to feel empowered during this part of the process, so you can help in the treatment.

We offer many different options based on where you are in your recovery process and the symptoms you may have.

For most foot pain, your treatment is usually done in three main stages:

  • At the beginning stages of the rehab, more hands-on treatments are used to manage symptoms and decrease pain.
  • As rehab progresses, more movement-based interventions are needed to improve coordination, movement patterns, and strength.
  • For a patient in the final stages of rehabilitation, a physical therapist focuses on improving their endurance so they can participate in high level activities and decrease their chance of re-injury.
